Getting started

First setup: your first folders

Free
Edition: Free (the dialog is hidden while Plathix PRO is active) · Plathix Lab: test results on this page

After activation, Plathix opens its Home screen with a setup dialog. You can apply a ready folder set, clear the tree and start from scratch, or skip the dialog and build folders by hand. This page explains each choice, the system folders in the panel, and how to bring the dialog back.

When you need this

  • A blog with several authors. You apply Blog & Content, so featured images, author photos and logos each get a folder before the next upload.
  • A WooCommerce store with product photos. You apply E-Commerce, then rename “Electronics” and “Clothing” to your own product groups.
  • A client site with its own naming. You skip the dialog and create the client’s folders by hand.

How to apply a ready folder set from the setup dialog

The dialog is titled “Set up your media library” and carries the badge “First setup”. Its text reads “Pick a starting folder structure or start from scratch. You can always change this later.” Below are up to six preset cards and three buttons: Skip setup, Browse all presets and Start from scratch →. The × in the corner, the Esc key and a click outside the dialog card work like Skip setup.

The cards are the first six valid presets in your catalog, A to Z by title. Built-in and uploaded presets both count. On a site with only the built-in presets, the cards are Blog & Content, Creative Agency, E-Commerce, Fashion & Apparel, News & Media and Nonprofit.

The built-in presets are added to this list when Plathix > Presets is opened.

The dialog covers the whole screen, including the WordPress menu and the admin bar. Do not try to reach Plathix > Presets through the menu while it is open: a click outside the dialog card skips the setup for good. Use the dialog’s own Browse all presets link instead.

> Tip: If the dialog shows no presets, click Browse all presets, then come back to Plathix > Home.

  1. Open Plathix > Home. Right after activation it opens by itself, with the dialog on top.
  2. If the dialog shows no cards, click Browse all presets. It opens Plathix > Presets, which adds the built-in presets to the list. Then go back to Plathix > Home.
  3. Click Apply on a card. Each card shows a description and the folder count, for example “8 folders”.
  4. Read the confirmation: “Apply this preset? It adds a ready-made folder structure to your media library. Your existing folders and media are not deleted; folders with matching names are created with an “— imported” suffix.” Click OK.
  5. Plathix opens Plathix > Presets with the notice “Preset “Blog & Content” applied. 8 folders created.”
  6. Go to Media > Library. The new folders are in the panel.

What to expect:

  • The folders are created empty. Plathix does not sort your files into them.
  • A preset only adds folders, and only in the Media Library.
  • If a folder with the same name already exists at the same level, the new one gets a plain hyphen suffix: “Brand – imported”, then “Brand – imported 2”, and so on.
  • There is no undo. Remove unwanted folders by hand, or use Start from scratch → to clear the tree.
  • Applying a preset does not close the dialog for good. It appears again on your next visit to Plathix > Home until you skip it with Skip setup, the ×, the Esc key or a click outside the dialog.

To pick from all presets, click Browse all presets. See Ready folder sets.

How to build your own folder tree

  1. In the dialog, click Skip setup or the ×. The Esc key and a click outside the dialog do the same. Nothing is created or deleted, and the dialog does not come back.
  2. Go to Media > Library.
  3. Open Media (the view with all files) to create a top-level folder. To create a subfolder, open its parent folder instead.
  4. Click the plus button at the top of the folder panel. Its tooltip reads “+ Folder”.
  5. An inline field with the placeholder “Folder name:” appears. Type a name and press Enter. Press Esc or click elsewhere to cancel.
  6. Right-click a folder to open its menu: “Add to favorites”, “New subfolder”, “Rename”, “Color” and “Move to Trash”.
  7. Drag files onto a folder, or select several files and move them together. See Put files into folders.

The plus button is greyed out while Uncategorized or Trash is open. It is hidden for users who cannot manage folders. For more about folders, see Create, rename, move and delete folders.

How to start from scratch

Start from scratch → deletes every folder you created, including folders that are in Trash. System folders stay, and no media file is deleted. The same button, labelled Start from scratch, is on Plathix > Presets.

  1. In the dialog, click Start from scratch →.
  2. If you have folders, the browser asks “This will delete N Plathix folders. Media files will not be deleted. Continue?”. N includes folders in Trash. Click OK.
  3. Plathix opens Media > Library with the notice “All folders have been reset. You can now start from scratch.”

Your files lose their folder and appear in Uncategorized. The setup dialog still appears on Plathix > Home until you skip it (Skip setup, the ×, Esc or a click outside the dialog).

How to use Media, Uncategorized and Trash

Three system folders sit at the top of the folder panel. You cannot rename, move or delete them.

  1. Click Media to see the whole Media Library. Plathix takes this label from WordPress, so an English site shows “Media”.
  2. Click Uncategorized to see the files that have no folder yet. You cannot create subfolders inside it.
  3. On Plathix > Home, click Fix in the Unsorted widget. It opens the same Uncategorized view.
  4. Click Trash to see the files and folders you moved to Trash. They are kept for the number of days set in Plathix > Settings > Trash (30 by default). Trash shows in the panel only when it is not empty.

Files you upload while a folder is open go into that folder.

How to bring the setup dialog back

  1. Go to Plathix > Presets.
  2. Click Reset wizard. It is the last button in the page header, after Start from scratch.
  3. The notice “Wizard reset. It will appear on the Dashboard on next visit.” appears. “Dashboard” here means Plathix > Home.
  4. Open Plathix > Home. The dialog appears again.

When Plathix PRO is active, this dialog is not shown, even before PRO is licensed. PRO shows its own multi-step wizard only while its license is active. Use the PRO version released for your Plathix version. See Plathix PRO.

Example

Start. Suppose you just activated Plathix on your blog. The Media Library has 12 files, among them summer-campaign.png, office-interior.png and logo.png. The folder panel shows Media 12 and Uncategorized 12. The setup dialog on Plathix > Home would show no preset cards yet.

What you do.

  1. You click Browse all presets, then go back to Plathix > Home. The dialog would now show six cards.
  2. You click Apply on Blog & Content (“8 folders”) and click OK.
  3. You go to Media > Library. You drag summer-campaign.png and office-interior.png onto Editorial › Featured Images, and logo.png onto Brand › Logos.
  4. You open Plathix > Home and click Skip setup.

Result. Plathix would show the notice “Preset “Blog & Content” applied. 8 folders created.” The panel would show Editorial › Featured Images, Authors; Videos; Infographics; Brand › Logos, Icons. After a page reload, Uncategorized would show 9. The dialog would no longer appear on Home.

What we tested

These checks from Plathix Lab cover parts of this page:

Check Result
Media, Uncategorized and Trash stay on top and cannot be renamed, moved or deleted Passed
Every item of the folder menu works, including Color and Add to favorites Passed
A duplicate name next to a live folder is blocked with a clear message Passed
The same folder name is allowed under different parents Passed

Limits

  • Presets work for the Media Library only, not for posts, pages or products.
  • Plathix ships 9 built-in presets, each 2 levels deep. Uploaded presets can have up to 200 folders, 7 levels and names up to 150 characters, in a ZIP up to 512 KB.
  • The dialog shows at most six cards. Browse all presets opens the full list.
  • On a fresh install, the dialog shows its preset cards after Plathix > Presets has been opened once. The dialog’s Browse all presets link opens it.
  • Skip setup, the ×, the Esc key and a click outside the dialog all end it for good. Applying a preset and Start from scratch → do not.
  • Start from scratch → also deletes folders that are in Trash.
  • Only administrators see the setup dialog and the Presets screen.
  • Folder names may use any language and emoji, up to 200 bytes (about 100 Cyrillic letters or 50 emoji). Extra spaces and line breaks are collapsed. Invisible control and direction characters are rejected with “Folder name contains control or bidirectional characters.” HTML tags are removed.
  • Two folders with the same name cannot sit at the same level. The panel shows “A folder with this name already exists here.” The same name under different parents is allowed.
  • The Uncategorized count updates when you reload the page.

In short

After activation, Plathix > Home shows the “Set up your media library” dialog. You can apply a ready folder set, clear all your folders with Start from scratch, or click Skip setup and build the tree by hand. A preset creates empty folders and never moves your files. If the dialog shows no cards, click Browse all presets, then come back to Plathix > Home. The dialog keeps coming back until you skip it (Skip setup, ×, Esc or a click outside), and Reset wizard on Plathix > Presets brings it back later.
